Microsoft’s previously announced event taking place May 7, 2020 has been confirmed by Aaron Greenberg to feature never-before-seen Xbox Series X gameplay from third party publishers. These reveals are expected to be the first next-generation game announcements as Sony has played their PlayStation 5 lineup quite close with little to nothing currently known about it still.
E3 is cancelled, Nintendo Direct style presentations are being announced by publishers like EA, and the next generation of video game consoles is right around the corner. “So pumped to see our partners showing us a first look at Xbox Series X gameplay next week,” said Xbox’s Aaron Greenberg. “Also know the Xbox Game Studios teams are hard at work on some big some plans.”
Some have wondered if we will get a price announcement for the Xbox Series X. It seems slightly early for that as traditionally game consoles have been given their retail pricing during E3 events which take place in June.
But while many may be expecting a $599 USD price point for the Xbox Series X, we are hoping they attempt to cutthroat Sony by taking a larger loss on the hardware with a MSRP of $499 USD. Even better, if they catch the PlayStation 5 by surprise both consoles could end up at the $499 price point, giving us a much more interesting generation.
I think it would still be an evenly matched battle though even if Xbox ends up having the slightly higher specs and they match PS5 on price. That’s because Sony will have exclusives right out of the gate, and the fan favor of last gen to carry on goodwill with most of the gaming community…
As admitted within this announcement, Xbox will take years longer to launch their new first party games and they are the ones who need to prove themselves to gamers all over again after the mishandlings of XO’s launch by Ex-Zynga CEO Don Mattrick. So, in my perspective, they need to sacrifice that little bit extra just to try meeting Sony on an even footing to start this battle.
Even if Microsoft can match Sony on price and beat them on specs, even then, it will be an uphill one for them in the next video games console generation. But Phil Spencer, who is a life-long gamer and well-liked Microsoft workforce veteran since 1988, has put major efforts into Xbox One X, xCloud, and Xbox Game Pass which should help the XSX capture mindshare before its launch Holiday 2020 as well.
