RGN CHIEF VIDEO REACTION / ANALYSIS

RGN brings you the World Premiere games shown for the first time today in this 3,600 word article packed with Xbox Series X footage, specs, details, release dates, and more behind the scenes knowledge of the first next-gen games ever revealed. Bonus: RGN’s Final Verdict and video reaction.

The familiar music that might be growing among some of us has likely been heard by more people than usual this morning as the Pandemic situation has created a lot of work from home people with time to kill. This warm-up music leading up to the moment the Inside Xbox May 2020 Event would start took a shift about 4 minutes beforehand and gave us something new. Perhaps a sign of things to come, new year – new Xbox!

Aaron Greenberg streamed live from his kitchen with a hilarious meme Xbox Series X “fastest most, powerful fridge” and let us know right away that today we’ll be seeing the first ever Xbox Series X gameplay footage. Matt Booty came on next to confirm that all Xbox Game Studios staff are working at home currently to remain safe and keep production moving forward.

Xbox Game Studios begins unveiling gameplay from their first party titles starting in July including Obsidian, Double Fine, 343 Industries, and more.

Aaron Greenberg got really pumped and seemed to be brimming with information about Halo that will get us all excited. But for now, here we go with some third party stuff for next-gen.

The first look at Xbox Series X Gameplay, as promised, began to roll out. Every game we were shown today is being optimized for Xbox Series X.

BRIGHT MEMORY: INFINITE

FYQD-Studio, one individual person, has produced this great looking game with tons of versatility and variety. In the first trailer we see photorealistic first person action similar to Mirror’s Edge with Killzone style gunplay and a grappling hook like Just Cause. Suddenly, an enemy grabs a sword and you defend yourself with a sword. The action of three genres at once? THe visual fidelity and steady frame rates are stunning in this game which then brings us through a muddy drive in vehicles. Ray tracing, faster in game load times, smart delivery (free next gen upgrades). are re-iterated as innovative features for this title.

Keep in mind, what you are about to see is actual gameplay captured in-engine on Xbox Series X.

This game is more playful with the color pallette than most racers while still producing striking visuals and unwavering frame rate for what is true gameplay from the Xbox Series X. The success of Dirty Rally 2.0 definitely proves a demand for this game, take a look at the end of this presentation for dev talk with more details revealed and keep an eye out for this first frame rate pushing title on next-gen.

WORLD PREMIERE: SCORN

For the first time since its announcement in 2014 and since production began in 2015, we finally have the incredibly disturbing SCORN project coming to life. Thanks to Microsoft, ebb Software will be able to finish this game and have chosen to release only on Xbox Series X (and PC later) rather than previous generations given the tech limitations would hurt the game.

In the world premiere trailer, very creepy scenes are shown, gothic in nature. Breathing sacks of flesh are attached to monuments of a strange demonic culture. An eerie tone fills the soundscape. Strange beings and large suits of armor are everywhere. Creatures emerge from sacks and plug in to humanoid figures which aid in each other’s spawn.

SCORN is perhaps one of the most horrific and intriguing games premiered in many years, even more than Death Stranding.

WORLD PREMIERE: CHORUS: RISE AS ONE

Order out of chaos, one of my favorite themes.

Real gameplay has been shown right away with cinematics mixed in and coming in later in the trailer, huge respect to Microsoft for leading by example on that one since earlier in the show. The vehicles and characters present an interesting plot potential for this title. CHORUS: Rise As One is a 2021 will be published by Deep Silver and created by Fishlabs as a new space combat IP.

WORLD PREMIERE: MADDEN 21

Patrick Mahomes, QB of the Kansas City Chiefs, got to be part of the development effort behind the game coming to Xbox Series X. “Know where you came from” is one of the pillars of development for this title which is why EA Sports presented us with a Madden recap from all of the games that have come thus far. Loads of Madden 21 news is promised to be coming soon, and we are also told that the game isn’t just about what you can see it’s about what you can feel (hint at haptic feedback features of next-gen controllers).

  • Smart Delivery Confirmed (free next-gen upgrade)
  • Publisher / Developer: EA Games

Sarah Bond, Head of Xbox Partnerships took up the torch hosting from home next and discussed how her job involves connecting creators and publishers who have been very busy right now creating titles that will define next-gen. “Every major publisher worldwide is publishing for Xbox. Hundreds of games coming to Xbox Series X in 2021. Support is tremendous.” were some of her beacons of hope for gamers, with the sentimental “Never seen Xbox third party development as excited as it is right now.” added for good measure!

VTM – BLOODLINES 2

Paradox Interactive presents a new ‘World of Darkness’ with
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2.

The improvements in game engine tools have made development smoother and games are benefiting as a result. This title in particular shows the continued interest in the gothic theme from publisher Paradox Interactive who has teamed up with Hardsuit Labs to produce a new vampire thriller action game resurrecting a previously hailed franchise.

However, this production is definitely kicking this up a notch in the new First Person RPG to reinvigorate the series and keep the flame strong for Vampire themed games.

Developer Quote: “Enter the World of Darkness and rise through vampire society. Experience Seattle – a city full of alluring, dangerous characters and factions. In this sequel to the cult classic, your choices, plots and schemes will change the balance of power.”

WORLD PREMIERE: CALL OF THE SEA

This title has a fascinating way of bringing both detailed and abstract art styles to life at the same time. The whole theme and charm of 1930s culture serves to add some comedic relief to an otherwise astounding journey for gamers. Call of the Sea is made up of islands, underwater landscapes, bright graphics with a mixture of texturing and polygonal design, fantasy art theme, all with ray tracing making night scenes and rain look absolutely incredible. We look forward to seeing how gameplay is mixed with this artistic underwater story-teller of a game.

  • Smart Delivery Confirmed (free next-gen upgrade)
  • Ray Tracing confirmed
  • 4K, 60 frames per second confirmed
  • More Info on Xbox Website: Call of the Sea
  • Publisher: Raw Fury / Developer: Out of the Blue

  • Genre(s): First Person, Adventure, Puzzle

WORLD PREMIERE: THE ASCENT

Next up, something very different by Neo Giant. The government has shut down (again), and now corporate warfare has ensued as factions battle for control in a high-tech neo future. Sounds familiar, right?

Well we may not be able to handle things the same in real life as in video games, but at least it provides an escapism and stress relief from a seemingly cyborg-bound society. In The Ascent, there’s guns everywhere, creatures, experiments, and a need for knowledge from the higher ups.

Twin Stick Shooters have never been so advanced. The Ascent presents a true next generational leap for the genre. This game helps to show the way forward for various aging genres which can be uplifted through the new tech being standardized by next-gen consoles including power, storage, and speed.

  • Smart Delivery Confirmed (free next-gen upgrade)
  • 4K, 60 frames per second confirmed
  • More Info on Xbox Website: The Ascent
  • Publisher: Curve Digital / Developer: Neon Giant
  • Release Date: 2020
  • Genre(s): Action RPG

Developer Quote: “The Ascent is a solo and co-op action RPG set in a cyberpunk world. The mega corporation that owns you and everyone, The Ascent Group, has just collapsed. Confusion and chaos ensue, security and order are in disarray, and without protection, everyone is left to fend for themselves.”

WORLD PREMIERE: THE MEDIUM

A mysterious and abstract game is coming for Holiday 2020 with incredible intrigue. Writer of The Medium, Andrzej Madrzak, took screen to tell about the next gen psychological horror game. It was first revealed during the presentation at this point that renowned Silent Hill 2 composer Akira Yamaoka is on the team. Gameplay was also shown which seems to blend elements of survival horror games with adventure and the scientific fringe of astral travel. Continue to the end of this article to read about the dev talk which was captured off-air concluding the livestream.

Developer Quote: “Become a medium living in two worlds: the real and the spirit one. Haunted by a vision of a child’s murder, you travel to an abandoned hotel resort, which years ago became the stage of an unthinkable tragedy.”

WORLD PREMIERE: SCARLET NEXUS

In a very different, almost anime-style high tech future Bandai Namco seems to have given the world something to look forward to as well. “The others have arrived”, a strange plague on man which cannot be harmed nor stopped… until now?

Yuito Sumeragi has powers of kinetic psychic combat in this open world action / adventure reminiscent of Devil Survivor with a dash of Devil May Cry on top. Welcome to the OSF. Elite Psionic Warriors must exterminate the threat, but wind up entangled in their mysteries with this ‘Brain Punk’ style.

Developer Quote: “-a new recruit to the OSF aiming to become an elite psionic like the one who saved him as a child. Armed with a talent in psycho-kinesis-“

WORLD PREMIERE: SECOND EXTINCTION

Fight dinosaurs together in a just-for-fun style game inspired by Destiny and Borderlands on Xbox. Earth has fallen, rally your squad, kill them all. With great graphics and no HUD (heads-up display) in the trailer, it will be cool to see if the devs follow through with such a minimalist design.

  • Smart Delivery Confirmed (free next-gen upgrade)
  • Release Date: To Be Announced (Closed Beta: Summer 2020)
  • More Info on Xbox Website: Second Extinction
  • Publisher / Developer: Systemic Reaction
  • Genre(s): 3 Player Co-Op Action, Shooter / Hack and Slash

Developer Quote: “-your goal is to wipeout the mutated dinosaurs that have taken over the planet. Teamwork is vital as you adopt the role of one of the survivors, using a combination of weapons, abilities and skills-“

WORLD PREMIERE: YAKUZA LIKE A DRAGON

He always believed a family reunion was waiting for him on the outside after taking the jail sentence for his people, but when he got out no one was there for him. Abandoned, betrayed, shot, and left for dead – this Yakuza member must now find a new path. Yakuza action has been upgraded to a new level in Yakuza: Like A Dragon. It appears earlier rumors of the game were true but its listing with Xbox claims “dynamic” and “action” RPG battles, meaning a turn-based mode seems unlikely as its core.

Toshihiro Nagoshi assured fans that this is not a quick spin-off, but rather Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s latest effort to push the limits of video games. The title will be a part of the Xbox Series X launch lineup and released on Xbox One / One X and PC as well with support for Smart Delivery so players can play anywhere.

**UPDATE** There is a potential that earlier rumors have been true about the potential turn-based nature of Like A Dragon, even though the publisher has chosen to tag it with the Action genre. We will perform an extensive coverage if that is the case for Review as it will be very interesting to see Yakuza interpreted in a strategic role playing game nature.

[Rumor Info Sourced: According to an interview translated by Gematsu*, Yakuza : Like a Dragon will feature a turn-based combat system.]

Developer Quote: “-get ready to crack some underworld skulls in dynamic RPG combat set against the backdrop of modern-day Japan.”

Damon Baker Head of Global Portfolio, Xbox (and formerly of Nintendo) personally expressed excitement to play these games and experiments with custom backgrounds on Zoom to show off Scarlett Nexus, Dirt 5, and “a quick view of Phil Spencer’s home office” as a joke showing the gothic scene from SCORN.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is be shown next to conclude the show and after the show there were a few brief developer talks discussing the industry aired by Xbox but not included in replay.

ASSASSIN’S CREED VALHALLA

Smart Delivery was then confirmed for AC Valhalla. A brand new cinematic trailer is shown giving us further insights into the new title which already has AC fans and fans of Odyssey / Origins alike foaming at the mouth.

BONUS: VALHALLA DEV TALK

Ashraf Ismail, Creative Director Ubisoft dialed into a call from Montreal Canada live with Jeff Rubenstein of Xbox PR.

In this teleconference, Ashraf Ismail explains that the footage shown today is “direct in-engine” and they go as far as to call it “gameplay” although I would say it was more of a look around with special cameras.

Our friends over at GamersPrey released a reaction to Ubisoft’s claim of this video being “Gameplay” which we found to be very true, we really enjoyed this Xbox Event but Ubisoft jumped the shark by using the term “gameplay” for in-engine cinematic views with a free-aim camera swirling around. That’s not gameplay. They have done this for years. I won’t let it ruin the impeccable presentation Microsoft gave today, but yeah way to show you are still far behind Xbox team in honesty and integrity Ubisoft!

Nevertheless, it’s great to see the game making progress at a steady rate. The Viking invasion and the British history behind it are discussed. Ismail confirmed hidden blades, playing as Vikings, hero who is a Viking raider leaving snowy mountains of Norway for the rich lands of England to settle their people and grow settlement.

Players go raiding using longships raiding party assault giant fortifications in epic battles gain alliances with kings and legendary vikings faced with harsh choices as the leader of a community reinvented combat to be visceral brutal tons of variety weapons systems gears pushing every single envelope to deliver the incredible Viking fantasy

It has also been completely confirmed now that the British are indeed the antagonists and Vikings are the protagonists, but the morality of the situation will be addressed throughout the player’s choices and actions as friction comes up.

Xbox Series X allows the game to be incredibly immersive and the real life European landscape was brought to life in the game by the team. Smart Delivery is re-iterated as a vital service to the player; get to play it on Xbox Series X version for free if you already bought on Xbox One / XBox One X

This title has been getting a ton of attention since its breakthrough reveal in 20:40:1 Aspect Ratio. We’ve been told Valhalla is being developed by all Ubisoft studios around the globe working together jointly. It’s an all-hands-on-deck scenario as Rockstar Games achieved with both GTA V and RDR 2.

Developer Quote: “In Assassin’s Creed® Valhalla, become Eivor, a legendary Viking raider on a quest for glory. Explore England’s Dark Ages as you raid your enemies, dual-wield powerful weapons, personalize and grow your clan’s settlement, and build your political power.”

BONUS: DIRT 5 DEV TALK

Malik Prince from Xbox came on next with Robert Karp from Codemasters and they spoke about Dirt 5 to discuss the locations, the graphics, and more. Nolan North and Troy Baker will also both be in Dirt 5 and possibly more cameos from recognizable faces.

BONUS: THE MEDIUM DEV TALK

The Medium got a closer look as well with Bloomberg team meeting Catarina Macedo of Xbox with deep concepts that inspired the game’s premise, such as; “What can you sacrifice for your family?” showing the team has a highly artistic game in mind.

“If I am still human if my mind is digital or I am made of many robotic parts?” are extra questions posed alongside the game’s body horror concepts. verbage. Blair Witch psychology (PTSD), and more.

By comparison, The Medium is about seeing both realities, Bloomberg team teamed with legendary Silent Hills composer Akira Yamaoka. Most important was his work on Silent Hill 2 because for the most of the team it’s the best horror game ever and a huge reference for atmosphere in Medium. The team praised his work on the title for its nostalgic, emotional, melodic, mixed with the expectation, fantasy, escapism, fear, and different points of view. The Medium also uses a Two Worlds system made capable by Xbox Series X horsepower

Unfortunately at this point of the show the voice quality of the chats were less than the earlier portions of the show. This cannot be blamed on Microsoft though, as the work from home situation is taking its toll on every country’s media publications currently at the time of this writing.

Aaron Greenberg returned to the screen and announced that Xbox is not taking the Summer off. In July Xbox Game Studios will reveal a ton of news and first party world premieres / gameplay reveals. Stay Tuned to RealGamerNewZ for coverage!

PRESENTATION GRADE: A+

FINAL VERDICT

What was missing most from the proposition of a new console generation has clearly been one thing; the games. Players have been waiting for a lineup they can look forward to, now they have it. A great variety of next level titles were premiered with Smart Delivery announced meaning that you can buy these games whenever then receive the Xbox Series X upgraded versions for free when next-gen consoles launch. The team at Xbox is on a roll here and Aaron Greenberg’s production skills are on point as he brings leadership to the team so Phil Spencer can be off getting more contracts signed.

It seems a lot of people are waiting on Sony to show something. I am certainly interested to see what they have up their sleeves. However, while Microsoft and Sony can easily sell their own games to us, the industry would suffer if third party studios had no place to promote their brand new next-gen titles. Some of these games cost up to half a billion dollars to produce at times and with E3 being cancelled, Sony’s last event from Shawn Layden being trash prompting his resignation, we should be thankful that Microsoft is running the best promotional presentations at the moment.

Butter smooth frame rates and a variety of art styles in-engine Xbox Series X footage. What more can you ask for? One final note to add; there were Xbox Series X exclusives after all despite earlier “reports” that there wouldn’t be any for 1 – 2 years.

INSIDE XBOX SERIES X FULL REPLAY

COMING SOON: XBOX 20/20 (MONTHLY)

During the show developers hinted at the haptic feedback for the Xbox Series X controller twice, but didn’t go into detail. Perhaps more time is still needed to determine the best way to showcase that digitally. We will find out soon as a new event will be hosted by Microsoft each month; Xbox 20/20, in a new format starting June 2020 with Cyberpunk 2077 showcase and then in July 2020 we will see the Xbox Game Studios first party gameplay on XSX.
