The Mims: Beginning is a funny take on the strategy genre. From the very start of the game the player will find themselves introduced to a clan of Mims. The Mims are creatures from outer-space that are stranded on an unknown planet and the player is their only hope for survival. From the start of the commentary the captain and his fellow Mims have a humorous way about them. Which is written into the dialogue by the developers, which in my opinion, is very refreshing for the strategy genre.
The game starts out with the Mims explaining the very basics of the game. By walking the player through each of the buildings so that the play can understand how the economy works. This is very helpful because with every building there is a text box that pops up, explaining the importance of each building and how it helps the city and the Mims overall. The Mims are aware that of player and asks that they save them and help them survive. The Mims also seem to obsess over bio-pudding which is presumably a delicacy among their kind and is humorous.
Besides building the city on this island there is also the importance of actually taking care of the Mim’s. Happiness as well as keeping their stamina high. This is so they can continue to do their job. This is done with the power or PSI powers. These are unlocked as the player progresses through the game. Some of these have limited uses while others can be used over and over. The world itself depends on the Mims to produce Biomass from fruits which they chuck into very large juicers and as well as wind turbines. Turbines are necessary buildings that also allow the creation of more buildings as well.
Gems are the in-game currency and can be made my selling animals that are made from the biolab, grown on the island ,and then sold to the space port. Giving the game a feeling that it is an ever-evolving world that is being played out for the user. The game also has a great sense of humor and that is what I found that may draw in new users to this genre. The gameplay the color pallet is beautiful, the game is also very bright and vibrant, and items in the world actually stand out. One of the features that really stands is the Smell-O-Meter. The Smell-O-Meter indicates what smells the most on the island. The smells can be from either fruit or the creatures on the island. The Smell-O-Meter can also warn the player of predators off in the horizon.
The world that the Mim’s are stranded is always evolving and there is seemingly always new challenges which they must face in order to survive. I can’t wait to see what the developers will add to the experience once the fully game is out. You can support them over at Steam Greenlight and you can download their demo right off their site at http://www.mimsthegame.com/ and try it out today!
