GTA V Online: The Doomsday Heist was shown to be something of a Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon type of update with players getting an uber extreme fantasy version of Grand Theft Auto Online. It looks fun and is refreshing to see Rockstar Games getting creative without worrying too much about taking things seriously. This could be a sign that something significant such as spin-off sequels or new single player content could still be worth hoping for.

Breath of the Wild Expansion: The Champion’s Ballad was released for users who own an expansion pass for the title on Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo Switch. It became available during the night of The Game Awards in celebration of the industry trade show event and recognition ceremony. Reggie himself also appeared and Nintendo won many awards including Game of the Year and Best Game Direction both being awarded to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as well as Best Family Game of the Year awarded to Mario Odyssey.

World Premiere of Fortnite 50 v 50 mode with base-building became available during The Game Awards in celebration of the industry event. Epic Games took stage to recognize the player-base of the game and thank players for trying out a new experience with them pledging to continue adding new ideas to keep the game fresh.

When asked about Cross Play, Epic Games producer said that “Gamers want cross play. Due to platform constraints some people can’t play with their friends.” hinting and leaning on Sony to allow PS4 players to join in on the party between Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Xbox which now allow play between the two platforms as well as PC on Rocket League and potentially will continue to support cross play in the future.

Don’t forget, Cross Play is actually something Sony has wanted and always been denied by Xbox in the past up until now where the tables have turned. In any event, the new mode looks great and gamers are already playing it and enjoying it a lot. Platforms: PS4, Xbox, PC, Mac OS X

World Premiere of Bayonetta 3 the Nintendo Switch Exclusive Now in development by PlatinumGames in Japan. This is one that had the crowd losing their minds in sudden anticipation, it was truly brutal that no date or target release window was given on the spot, but patience is a virtue for Nintendo Switch owners.

Longest World Premiere Ever: Death Stranding of Kojima Productions headed up by Hideo Kojima himself with Guillermo del Toro and Sony to the rescue getting Konami out of the picture once and for all. The title is considered deliciously creepy, still vague, but promising by many onlookers who await a full gameplay reveal and release date patiently. There’s no rush on Kojima to work his magic.

Editor’s Note: Recently leading up to this, several games were cancelled or rushed out early while Hideo Kojima was under pressure from Konami and ended up leaving as a result.

A Way Out Passionate Trailer and detailed look – what happened at The Game Awards when Josef Fares took stage was nothing short of legendary for free speech advocates everywhere. Although it is the single most casual moment of an otherwise pristine, professional awards show we all had hoped for (no corporate pandering) it was still needed in my opinion.

Josef Fares spoke out preemptively against gamers who might boycott his game due to EA publishing it. He stated: “This is the thing, it doesn’t have anything with the EA shit going on, with the loot box and stuff. They’ve been treating me very well. All publishers fuck up sometimes. That’s just how it is.” Even risking to fail to mention the announcement that users will be able to play for free with a friend as long as one person owns a copy (since this is a co-op game that makes sense and is appreciated). The game is a spiritual successor to Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, but with even more visceral gameplay elements.

Fares went on to promise that his game is all his idea, and not EA’s, and that no matter how big he gets he would never let a publisher tell him what to do with regards hinted towards something like the micro-transactions and lootbox scandal and fiasco going on with Star Wars Battlefront 2 right now – and oft became the topic of social commentary for the night.

Indie game impromptu speech of the year award goes to Josef Fares, if only they’d had the category. I really felt where he was coming from and it did make sense in context. A Way Out is a story-driven, cinematic co-op action / adventure game coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox on March 23, 2018 from development studio Hazelight Studios under publisher Electronic Arts using Unreal Engine 4.

Dreams by Media Molecule was given a minute to breathe and show it still exists. There is a dedicated crowd somewhere that has been waiting for this title since the PS3 days. It will likely take a bit more for crowds to go wild for this one, since we are still scratching our heads trying to remember what it was again. But genius takes time, and Media Molecule always delivers something innovative if nothing else. We look forward to hearing more at PSX 17 for this title this weekend.

GTFO is from a small dev team of 8 people who worked on Payday and Payday 2 called 10 Chambers Collective bringing a fresh combat experience with teamwork shooting mystery and maybe episodic or early access due to the size of the team. 2017 will see its first release “in some form” according to the developer who took stage for 10 Chambers at The Game Awards 2017.

Game of the Year 2017 Announcement at The Game Awards

Nintendo Switch: A Legacy of Excellence in Gameplay Design

  • Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won Game of the Year 2017
  • Nintedo’s Super Mario Odyssey won Best Family Game of the Year 2017

Nintendo really turned things around as their company has on more than one occasion. It was great to see them become recognized for so much hard work and effort put primarily towards game design itself and gameplay taking front seat. This is a gamers’ paradise with Nintendo Switch finally finding its rightful place into gamers hands of all age and type.
