Today, Nintendo released a Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS demo for their upcoming release of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on the North American eShop to coincide with the upcoming release of the title next week on Friday, July 13th, 2018 for both the Nintendo Switch and 3DS, retailing at 49.99 CAD/39.99 USD. The title is eligible for 200 gold points if you digitally preload the title through the eShop.
Captain Toad is back and he’s ready to travel with you! The popular spin off of Nintendo’s Super Mario 3D World’s minigame first appeared on the Nintendo Wii U in November of 2014 and with a fresh coat of paint and newly added Super Mario Odyssey-inspired levels, Nintendo is primed to bring the red and white explorer to new worlds and new places with a couple twists on the original Captain Toad formula.
The demo features three levels for you to sample in both single player and the new additional two player mode (exclusive to the Switch version), these being the Plucky Pass Beginnings, Mushroom Mesa and a boss encounter with the King of Pyropuff Peak. While the demo is brief, it gives players a chance to explore what Treasure Tracker has to offer and get a taste of the newly added multiplayer aspect.
The new multiplayer aspect plays very similarly to how two player mode worked in the Mario Galaxy titles, with one player playing as the titular captain and the other player controlling the camera rotation and assisting player one through the use of throwing turnips at enemies, collecting coins and revealing hidden items through exploring with their cursor. As the demo showed, the stats of single player and multiplayer are separated allowing players to do two separate play-throughs of the game upon its release, which I find a very great addition to an already interesting title.
After selling a million and a half copies on the Wii U, receiving critical praise for its polish and fun factor, and proving that Nintendo has plans to expand their game roster beyond the standard expectations of gamers, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker heads to the Nintendo Switch with two player capabilities for the first time on July 13th, 2018. We hope you’ve enjoyed our impressions of the demo that is now available for this title as well as some news information about the game itself. Below you’ll find a trailer for the game and if you want to learn more about Nintendo’s plans for 2018 then be sure to check out our coverage of this year’s Nintendo E3.
*Editor’s Note: A Nintendo 3DS version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will also release July 13th, 2018 but it is currently unclear if it will feature all of the capabilities the Wii U and Nintendo Switch versions contain.
