Hitman Go – Review

Hitman Go is a strategy/puzzle game set in the Hitman Universe from Eidos Montreal and Square Enix. The game takes our favorite anti-hero Agent 47 and places him into levels that are board games with each level being inspired by a mission from the main Hitman series. The game’s introductory levels show you the ropes to Hitman Go’s control scheme and game mechanics. The player must guide Agent 47 from the beginning of the each game board to the end all the while dodging guards and other enemies who when they see him will end the game.

The game is very easy at first but ramps up in difficulty and challenge as you will have to dodge multiple guards, use objects in the game world to distract or avoid them all the while watching the number of moves you us as well as obtain briefcases which will help you unlock more levels. When the player ends each level they are rewarded with coins that are engraved with the Agent 47’s seal. The more the player earns the more boards they can unlock. The only thing that may aggravate some players is that when they do finally unlock all of the levels in the game there are DLC game boards to purchase and the game is already $4.99 on the iOS and Google Play Store.

The smooth touch screen controls will keep the player in control of the Hitman’s movements on the board with no lag or accidental movements as your screen is locked during play. When the players find items they can use on the board to distract enemies they will prompted to use the item immediately within a certain area before making his next move. There are even areas on the board that will allow the Hitman to change his outfit to blend in with the characters on the board, transport himself across the board via a trapdoor and other signature movements from the series to spice up the game play.

Enemies will have different patrol routes in which they move and some will stay on their post. The player must make sure he does not move into the enemies’ line of sight or the player will lose the level. The game gives players enough challenge and will keep them playing to use less moves and complete the challenges to keep unlocking the levels in each game board. Hitman Go is very fun to play in short burst or long playthroughs and it’s very addictive; gamers may clear an entire board before realizing hours have flown by in the process.

There are puzzle and strategy games out there that will show you how to clear their levels/stages, or in some cases even do it for you and Hitman Go isn’t one of those and doesn’t. Hitman Go requires the player to think on their feet to advance to the next level. The omission of those hint type features makes Hitman Go stand out because it believes in its player and doesn’t want to hold their hand to beat any of the levels in the game, which is a bold move by the team at Eidos Montreal.

The graphics in Hitman Go are very clean yet sleek, gamers will feel the entire scope of Agent 47’s world all around them in each game board. The music and sound effects add an atmospheric effect to the puzzle action and will even hype players up at certain moments while clearing a board. The simplicity in the character and level design makes each level feel like part of a bigger, overarching world as they are in Hitman proper. If you are looking for a puzzle title that is great to play and embodies everything about Hitman this is the game for you. Hitman Go also has maintained if not surpassed the quality of the version of the game that we here at RGN demoed at Pax East this past April and truly lives up to the Hitman Legacy.  The game is polished and one of the best mobile games that have came out this year and is truly worth its price tag.

Final Verdict

Hitman Go is one of the best puzzle games that has ever been released and that is saying something coming from a licensed game. This title takes everything fans loved about the Hitman series and has fully translated it into a fresh and riveting experience from start to finish. The only strike against this game is the fact that there are in-app purchases for more game boards, but at the same time players still get a full gaming experience when they initially purchase the game for $5. Hitman Go is still a stellar title; a truly great game for puzzle fans and fans of the Hitman series alike.

Epiphany Games Annonces New RPG Thriller Majestic Nights

Epiphany Games, the minds behind Runic Rumble and Frozen Hearth, have just announced their next game called Majestic Nights. The annoncment was made today and the game sounds pretty intriguing and is one to watch out for. The game is described as being an RPG thriller set in an alternate 1980’s where all conspiracy theories, both past and present, are a reality. Majestic Nights will be released in six episodes beginning in September of this year with a free prologue story that takes place before the six main episodes titled Chapter Zero.  A new episode will be released each month until the finale is released on April 2015. Each episode is described as being one part of a complete story or each epoisde can be enjoyed as a standalone experience. Each episode can be purchased individually or all together within a season pass bundle, prices for either option have not yet been revealed. Majestic Nights is being referred to as season one, so if the game sells well, it seems that it could potentially become a brand new episodic franchise.  Here is the official synopsis of the game that was revealed in the announcement for Majestic Nights:

“It’s the bright and brash 1980s… a world crammed with hidden intrigue and sinister plots, government cover-ups and alien sightings, CIA experiments and a truth that definitely is out there… a world which needs a fast-talking loose cannon right about now…You play as Cardholder: an intelligence operative who may or may not have been present at or even responsible for many of the biggest conspiracy events in history; and Cal, a humble Private Investigator whose own past is shrouded in secrets unknown even to herself. With fast, light mechanics, the game has been developed to engross players in a shadowy world of conspiracy with an over-the-top 1980s aesthetic. Players will use wits, stealth and sometimes even a little force to investigate, explore, and acquire ever more clues for their big string-covered wall of conspiracies.”

Here is what Majestic Nights promises to deliver:

  • Isometric RPG gameplay
  • Real-time stealth and combat mechanics
  • Big hair!
  • Investigate and collect evidence to reveal the Truth
  • A vibrant alternative 1980s setting
  • A world full of conspiracy theories and government plots where everything you know is wrong
  • Nazi aliens!
  • Controller support for platforms including PC, Mac, iOS and Android
  • A gripping, six episode story
  • Puzzles, minigames and more!
  • Alternate story paths to explore
  • Kick-ass original 1980s soundtrack
  • ‘Chapter Zero’, a prologue to the core season, will be available free before launch
  • More Truth than any other game!
  • Season Pass will be available on all platforms (and comes with the soundtrack!)
  • Steam Achievements
  • Keytars

Sounds like a pretty neat and bold idea and I am excited to see where Majestic Nights will take us and what conspiracy theories will be incorporated into the series. As always, stay tuned to RealGamerNewz for any updates on Majestic Nights as they become available. Until then, check out the teaser trailer for Majestic Nights below.

Sparkle 2 Vita Review

The sequel to 10tons LTD’s smash hit original puzzle game “Sparkle” has finally arrived for Playstation Vita. Sparkle 2 brings everything from its original IOS and Android release to Sony’s Handheld. The player assumes the role of a hero who is tasked with finding five keys to that will unlock a nearly forgotten world. When this brief story cutscene ends the player is given a new orb slinger and then set off on their adventure. The controls are preliminary the same from the original, the touch screen can be used to launch the orbs from the slinger as well as the left analog nub and the x button. The orbs snake threw the level and attempt to fill the player’s base causing the player to lose the level and start again. The new power ups will give players a much needed boost during the levels and based off their performance players can once again gain access to Amulets that can augment their orb slingers power thus altering the state of their game.

The puzzle in Sparkle 2 are not for the faint of heart and will immediately give players a challenge. Levels are comprised multiple stream of orbs, that move at different speeds and with different lengths of orbs as well as different level layouts. The game issues the player challenges to complete to unlock new modes and new Amulets to power up your their orb slinger. Sparkle 2 unlike its predecessor never feels repetitive and will keep players on the edge of their seat trying complete a level. The game’s branching paths gives players a little choice in how they want to collect the games mythical keys. Sparkle 2 still lacks multiplayer mode but there’s so many more modes, unlocks and other extra features in the game making this one a must own for puzzle game fans that have a Playstation Vita.

The look of the Sparkle hasn’t really changed which is a bummer considering the fact that the Playstation Vita has a huge color palette on both the original OLED screen models and the new LED screen models. The orbs could have been more detailed and the levels could have a little more edge out and given a little more life on this platform. The game however is still sleek and the when it turns up the action gamers won’t even notice the vast similarity in Sparkle 2’s graphics to the original. The soundtrack is amazing, the medieval-esque tunes blend seamlessly with the game and change depending on your performance. If you are looking for great puzzle game to play anytime or anywhere with tons of levels that are both challenging and fun; look no further than Sparkle 2.

Final Verdict

Sparkle 2 is as addictive as a predecessor and address all but one of its problems. Sparkle 2 still lacks a multiplayer mode but there is so much content packed into the game you will nearly forget about it. Sparkle 2 is a grand puzzle game that stands out from ever growing market and should not be missed by any Vita owner.

Marvel Puzzle Quest Dark Reign Review

Marvel Puzzle Quest Dark Reign is a free to play puzzle game from D3 Publisher for the PC, iOS, and Android platforms. MPQDR is a spin-off of the main Puzzle Quest series focusing on the Dark Reign Marvel Comics event in which the villains best the heroes on every turn. In MPQDR, players will control three Marvel characters facing another three man team as they try to clear the board during each of their turns to inflict damage to their opponents team. In order to inflict damage players must match the blocks in patterns of at least 3 of a kind or more to attack the opponent.

There are certain patterns that are character specific and if cleared by the player the character will switch out and unleash a devastating attack. If more than one pattern is cleared during a turn this can chain together strikes thus inflicting more damage to the enemy and give you extra moves to lengthen the players turn. The player with the most characters left standing wins the match. D3 has set apart the game from other titles by giving the enemy a slight edge of turn sensitive blocks that can cause huge damage to your characters. The game is balanced out however because the more you use each hero and power them up the better your team will be come to take on the enemy

There are tons of Marvel characters and themed power ups to collect through the games missions or through the in game shop. When players complete each level they will gain power isos as well as coins to purchase booster packs in the shop or purchase Coin/Iso packs for an additional cost. The character cards are comic book covers of yesterday and gives players a point of reference if they want to read comics based on the characters on their team. Like other titles the inclusion of micro-transactions may put off some gamers to play the game but the pure fun and excitement of each match will keep most coming back for more. The cut scenes in the game in-between missions are kind of lackluster because most elements the Dark Reign events are changed to fit around the game’s items hurting the dialog between the characters.

There are no voice overs in the game and the characters dialog is presented in speech bubbles which is a nice touch since the games story is straight from the comics but even this becomes a bore after a while. The soundtrack is terrible and it will have gamers muting it and turning on their devices music players in an instant. The sound effects keep in-tune with graphics and will have gamers cheering when they have they see/hear the splash of explosions, slices energy beams, etc as they rack up a huge combo. The look and feel of the games backgrounds and character art take heavily from the source material and does give the game a personality that may have you reading the story arc after or in-between play sessions. If you ever should get tired of the main missions there are multiplayer missions as well as daily challenges to further your quest long after you complete the final missions.

Official Trailer:

Final Verdict:

Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign is a good puzzle title that will give you a break from other games in genre. The soundtrack, micro-transactions, and the adapted story may turn some gamers off initially but the compelling and addictive gameplay will make MPQDR the go to puzzle title for gamers.

Tiny Thief Review

Tiny Thief is a puzzle game from 5Ants and Rovio Stars for the PC, IOS and Android. The player takes control of a young thief that steals from the rich kingdom and gives to the poor townspeople and lowly animals. The game is presented and structured  like another Rovio title Angry Birds, there are three objectives in the level and you can gain three stars for completing it.

The twist to the game is you cannot be seen by the enemy adding a layer of stealth to the game play and every level ups the ante. The Thief’s movements are controlled by the click of the mouse or touch on your mobile device making Tiny Thief very easy to play. When beginning each level you will be greeted with a illustrated cut scene that details what you will be doing in the current level. These images show up very briefly but will ensue some laughs before jumping into play.

The Thief will be able to hide inside furniture, use animals, food and other things to distract the enemy guards. and finish the levels. The introductory levels serve as the games tutorial and as players progress the challenge will ramp up. Players will have to time the Thief’s movements so he won’t be spotted and if he is the they will lose the level and have to start again. Tiny Thief does a good job to reel the player in but not enough to keep him or her hooked and the control scheme is partly to blame.

It would have been nice if players were given a second control option to move the Thief freely around the stage using the arrow keys or swipe of the touch screen to ramp up the speed of the on-screen action. There will be some players out there who come into the game expecting the speed and excitement of games like Angry Birds or Run or Die and will be disappointed with the slow pace of the game.

The Thief will go to different sections of the kingdom as his adventure progresses. These new areas will present new mission objectives but some players may not want to follow his adventure for to long due to the games speed. Tiny Thief however still packs in enough charm and content that will cause players to come back even if they may be frustrated with the fixed control scheme just to see what happens next.

Tiny Thief’s character art and setting adds to the charm of the game with its playful color scheme and simplistic design. When the player looks upon Thief he sports a hooded garb similar to Robin Hood as he moves through the game’s medieval themed levels while he’s hoodwinking the guards. The medieval-esque fanfare also adds to games warm and happy tone despite the Thief robbing the Kingdom. The characters in the level also sport very subtle animations and when the player interacts with them wackiness ensues.

Final Verdict

Tiny Thief is a puzzle game that dares to be different and even through its shortcomings, it shines. The lack of control options and decreased variety as the player progress may shy some gamers away but overtime the games charm will bring players back for more adventures with the Thief.
