Fanboys Fall Back, Exclusives R Good 4 U

These days it seems everybody wants everything, and they want it on whatever console they happen to own. There seems to be a major backlash against exclusive games both from the majors as well as indie developers. What is sad though, is that many times a lack of quality content ends up being the result of the multiplatform obsession that the gaming community has thrust upon publishers and developers of all shapes and sizes.

In the following RGN Podcast we discuss just how we feel about console exclusives and address the age old excuse that gamers always throw up, claiming they cannot afford more than 1 platform to game on and that it’s simply not fair for some games to be available only on a different platform that they don’t own. Instead of catering to this victimized state of mind we have provided a compelling argument that will serve as the first part of a longer series of discussions aimed at proving the point of exclusive games being good for the industry as a creative force driving originality, innovation, and healthy competition causing the focus of development studios large and small on creating high quality video games we wouldn’t otherwise see in such a polished state / form. Surely not all multiplatform games are bad, but take a listen to what we had to say on this show and tell us you don’t agree that buying every halfway decent game just because it releases is a cheap cop-out compared to spending big on hardware then picking and choosing only excellent software to purchase for it.

RGN Data: PS4 Vs Xbox – Who Won Nex Gen ONE Launch?

Back in the very early months of 2013, RealGamerNewz started a passive poll system on our front page asking gamers a simple question. Which games and consoles were they looking forward to the most in the coming launch of the next-generation platform for the game industry’s main revenue and development focus – the dedicated console gaming sector. This is the place where most blockbuster titles recognized by the outward world are created. Perhaps this is most evident by the quick uptake and increase in buyers every time a new generation of hardware releases.

We released results many times to this poll, but rather than ending the data there: Here are the current standings of the poll which we’ve left up. This is the last time you’ll have a chance to see this poll’s results on the homepage though, since we will be launching a new one on there soon. The links below the images will take you directly to the poll and allow you to continue accessing it.

Editor’s Note: We have reason to believe this data is completely unbiased because the Poll is an IP poll that only allows 1 vote per person.

Sony Announces PS4 Global Sales Over 6 Million And Rising

Now that PlayStation 4 has had some time (about a week) to get into the hands of Japanese consumers who only had the console release just now while Americans have had it since the winter of last year. Everyone knows that stocks of PS4 units are selling still, like crazy. As promised, it appears Sony has begun to get a grip on demand by producing as many units as humanly possibly, then calling up aliens and having them produce some as well to make it even more than humanly possible – and the result is a lot of sales.

“PS4 sales cross 6 million globally”

PlayStation 4 has now sold over 6 million lifetime worldwide units, Sony announced on their official website.

There were more announcements as well included in this single statistic.

“As you’ve probably read by now, cumulative PS4 sales have now surpassed six million units worldwide following the successful launch in Japan just over a week ago. It’s truly humbling to see the rate at which gamers across the globe are choosing PS4 as their next gen console of choice. Even more exciting is what happens when gamers power up their PS4s. In the United States, more than 90% of PS4s are online, enabling gamers to connect, compete and share their greatness with friends and fellow gamers.”

Some more fun stats were released with this announcement as well:

  •  “PS4 gamers account for 20% of daily broadcasters on Twitch.”
  •  “100 million shares” (using the DualShock 4 controller’s share button to post pictures, stream live, or post videos to TwitchTV, Facebook, Twitter, and soon more including YouTube)

And another quite intriguing statement was made as well regarding video broadcasting on PS4:

“Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition features a built-in Broadcast+ mode where you can stream your gameplay while viewers on the PS4 or a web browser influence positive and negative effects during gameplay.” – John Koller / VP of Marketing – Home Consoles and Handheld Platforms, SCEA

Global Sales Update: PS4 Sold Over 400% More Consoles Than Competitor; Knack Outsold New Donkey Kong [Data]

According to the latest industry numbers being tracked by VGCharts, among others, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Global Sales for the Nintendo Wii U (for the week ending in February 22, 2014) have racked up somewhere in the neighborhood of 198,292 units (bringing the lifetime sales total for the title to 236,557 units). Knack for PS4 on the other hand has made a significant jump during the same week ending Feb 22 and has achieved 329,036 sales in one week (bringing the lifetime sales total for the title to 908,682 units).

The rest of the list also tells a pretty interesting story of how various demographics are spread out to mainly the Sony PS4 and PS3 in addition to the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and MS Xbox 360.

But of course players really want to argue, sling mud, debate, analyze, and get ‘giddy’ over the Global Hardware Sales for the week. So here it is. According to the numbers, The PlayStation 4 has achieved just below 4X as many sales as the Wii U did during the same one week period and the PS4 has surpassed selling 4X as many units as its competitor consoles. The PS4 sold 449,705 units bringing the total to 5,847,194 lifetime global sales of the next-generation gaming console from Sony already.

The Nintendo Wii U sold worse than the Xbox ONE and only achieved a move of 44,503 units versus the XO’s 56,769 units in the same one week period. The global lifetime sales total of the Xbox ONE is currently sitting at 3,544,947 while the Nintendo Wii U has only moved 5,765,484 units globally in its entire lifetime despite coming out a full year before the PS4 and Xbox ONE systems. Sadly the PlayStation Vita remains barely more relevant than the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo Wii while Xbox 360 sales are definitely on a decline and see PS3’s sales lead over 360 distancing further away. Take a look at the hardware charts below and draw your own conclusion.

Did Jack Tretton Just Call Out Microsoft For Fake Sales Numbers?

Unless this quote is being taken completely out of context (which seems unlikely at this point) Sony PlayStation Bossinator Jack Tretton may have just taken a shot at Microsoft’s recent allegedly fake sales numbers. Tretton discussed how Sony manufactures as many PlayStation 4s as they can, and we all know they have a lot more factory capability than their competition, and that they are not purposely creating any “feeding frenzy” and will not such as we’ve seen in the past with the Xbox and Wii brands in which units were recalled or never shipped to stores.

JT goes on to speak about how the Sony PS4 is the largest launch in history and “not just playstation history, but gaming history.” In other words Jack Tretton is claiming that the Sony PS4 is far and away the highest selling console of all time and indirectly confirms that the PS4 is selling much more units than the Xbox ONE. He went on to state that 12,000 units sold out in 27 minutes when we recently reported that Amazon had more (and then didn’t almost as soon as we hit publish). More on the situation as it develops.

PS4 VS Xbox ONE: The Scores Are In… (If You’re Into That Kinda Thing)

Gamers around the world are typically divided into two camps when it comes to Review Scores of video games. Either they care more about their friends detailed opinions and their own hands-own impressions, or they rely on the more readily available Review Scores from trusted publications. MetaCritic is a controversy in and of itself, but is a powerful tool for keeping track of such scores from an often small, select few chosen Review Score sources. Here’s the results for the PlayStation 4 VS Xbox ONE Review Scores currently being displayed by MetaCritic. Draw from this what conclusions you will, just don’t say we’re out here portraying it one way or the other; we offer no comment but encourage your speculation.

Creator of ‘Resident Evil’ and ‘The Evil Within’ Compares PS4 and Xbox ONE as “Almost Identical”

Shinji Mikami, who has created the epic Resident Evil franchise as well as the forthcoming New IP in the Horror genre under publisher Bethesda Softworks, made comments about the comparability of PlayStation 4 and Xbox ONE next-generation game consoles in terms of developing The Evil Within.

“We only need one console. Why do I have to make two versions of a game? And when Xbox One was first announced it had lower specs than PS4, but now they’re almost identical.

“So either will do.”

The Evil Within is expected to release on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox ONE and PlayStation 4 some time in 2014 utilizing the id Tech 5 Engine and developed by Tango Gameworks. Below is a Full 1080P HD Trailer for the game.
