Sony earlier today filed a trademark claim for “Resistance” which was previously being developed by long time Sony partner and now third party developer Insomniac Games. IG let go off the franchise after the poor sales of both Resistance 3 on the PlayStation 3 and Resistance Burning Skies which was PlayStation Vita exclusive and said the future of the franchise would be in the hands of another development team. There has been no further development as of right now of what this trademark could mean but its very possible that we may see Resistance return in some form or fashion to the PS4. Time will tell if Sony will remaster and re-package the Resistance Collection with Burning Skies for the PS4 or find/create another studio to develop another entry in the franchise. Sony is prematurely pulling the plug on Gran Turismo 5 as well as the Resistance series while arguably putting the dead dog to rest with both the SOCOM and MAG series. This is perhaps worst for MAG players as the title has no single player experience to speak of. Gran Turismo 5 and Resistance 3 are particularly surprising to see shut down this early in the game though and beg the question of gamers – when will Sony shut off Gran Turismo 6 if this is what they consider a decent life span for GT5’s online mode?
Time will tell, but luckily online isn’t as important for GT6 as it is for a first person shooter like Resistance. Players who never got to experience the arguably unique gameplay of Resistance 2’s online mode are completely out of luck if they don’t jump on it soon, and this action sets a precedent for even older titles like Warhawk which Dylan Jobe recently told us was safe – we’re not so sure after this (hopefully they green-light his vision for a Warhawk PS4 title. It would appear Sony doesn’t care about meeting the same standards as the PlayStation 2 era in terms of keeping online servers up for popular games.
January 28, 2014 is the Official Shut Down Date for these games. Sony has yet to comment how many other games are being shut off in 2014 and which / when.

Multiplayer Only they said, dedicated servers they said, 256 players they said, it’ll be awesome they said. They say a lot of things these days don’t they? Even though single player capable games like Demon Souls will continue having servers thanks to fan demand it appears multiplayer-only title MAG will have its servers shut off January 2014. This is only 4 years after the game’s original release date exclusively for Sony PlayStation 3 on January 2010.
The 256 player first-person shooter will never be played again once this happens, since the game is a squad-based tactical shooter set for multiplayer only gameplay. Anybody out there still buying the physical copies of the game will certainly feel foolish and robbed, take this as your only warning since it appears developers Zipper Interactive and publisher Sony Computer Entertainment America have no interest in shouting it from the rooftops.
No DRM, and no servers either… which for MAG means no functionality unfortunately. If this can happen to one of Sony’s largest first party investments, what is the fate of barely populated Killzone, Warhawk, and Resistance servers as time goes on? In other news, Socom: Confrontation servers will also be shut down. At least that game has an offline mode, and it’s pretty terrible anyways with nothing more than a cult following. Did we just say that out loud? Oops.
