The Boycott Gamer – Gabriel Knight Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition Review!

For those of you who have played the Gabriel Knight murder mystery series this remastered version is sure to hit home with some of you who played the original back when it released in 1993. Gabriel Knight Sins of the Fathers was an award winning murder mystery back in 1993 and now Pinkerton Road has released the remastered 20th anniversary edition.  The remastered edition features many upgrades from it’s original counterpart including new high resolution 3D graphics, new puzzles and scenes, a remastered soundtrack, and a bunch of behind the scenes goodies for those of you really into the Gabriel Knight series. Now personally I have never played a Gabriel Knight game and was very skeptical since it was a point and click murder mystery. But playing the remastered anniversary edition was actually quite enjoyable.

The Graphics were definitely a step up from the original, and from what I saw the original definitely didn’t have the graphics this one does now. I saw only a few comparison pics of the original and this one as I unlocked the bonus content while going through the story, and I have to say , I was very impressed with how different and more crisp the anniversary edition looks compared to the original game. I also saw quite a few major changes when it game to how the different areas looked within the game. As you can see in the pictures below the book store that Gabriel Knight owns definitely saw an upgrade from his predeceasing bookstore from the original.

Before

After

As you can also see the HUD display also got an upgrade. What was once grey and blocky is now colorful and from my view, a little more organized as well. The atmosphere in the original wasn’t all that, but the remastered version adds all the detail and realism into the game, from the glare in the windows, down to the books and lights. And what adds on to the atmosphere is the re-imagined music.  The music in the remastered version definitely goes with each scenario, from creepy to spooky, to upbeat and happy, all depending on where you are that is. The characters of course got a re-model as well, but what didn’t get a remodel was Gabriel’s attraction to the women in the game. And what I really found funny was whenever I selected the eye icon on a female, Gabriel would make a silly remark to himself involving the female. It was quite funny.

Final Verdict: The Game play in Gabriel Knight remains the same except for some new puzzles. You go around trying to find clues in order to figure out who the voodoo killer is, and while doing so gaining access to new areas to continue your explorations and gaining points. The remade edition was definitely a step up in terms of better graphics and a smoother story. All in all I recommend this especially if you were a fan of the classic Gabriel Knight game as well as a fan of the series.

Basement Crawl Becoming Basement Brawl… Free Makeover for PS4 Indie Game Coming Soon

So it’s no secret that we were more than a little bit excited for the release of a certain PlayStation 4 indie title called Basement Crawl which released a while back after much build up and our own RGN Interview of the dev team. This title which was set to be a multiplayer only re-imagining of the Bomberman style of gameplay landed to much harsh critical review. Our own experience with the title was not very good either. But we were promised something big was coming for those who had invested in the title. That something big is finally beginning to take form over at Bloober Team, the development studio responsible for its release.

Basement Crawl will receive a massive update that Bloober promises will upgrade the game in many ways and give it a completely different offering to gamers. If you already have Basement Crawl then you’ll get to experience all of this for free, since Bloober feels bad for making so many people upset with the initial release.

Once this update drops, Basement Crawl will no longer exist. Instead, Basement Brawl will be the new name of the game. Over the next few weeks videos will be released to show off exactly what is changing and how it looks, but here is a bulleted list of what was told to me in regards of what to expect from Basement Brawl – a new beginning for Bloober on PS4.

  • Single Player Campaign added to give back story to characters and the universe they inhabit.
  • New build on a new engine.
  • New gameplay mechanics (more details on this soon).
  • Beta before release (this might only be available to press though).
  • Plenty of user feedback incorporated, including many manually retrieved from user forums and online websites (so speak your mind and the devs will find your speech and attempt to translate that into this makeover of the game).
  • Q4 2014 release window expected.

Stay Tuned for More info on Basement Brawl as it becomes available.

Leak Turned Reality – Battlefield: Hardline Coming Soon – Dirty Cops, Drug Lords, Shoot Outs, and Blood Money

This week there has been a rumor turned reality of a new Battlefield game in the works code named “Omaha” also known by its new official name, Battlefield Hardline.

In celebration of this official confirmation, EA Games has decided to give away Battlefield 3: Standard Edition for PC free for all Origin members (hurry up) through their ‘On The House’ sale. This title is being developed by Visceral Games, the developer behind the amazing horror series Dead Space. Battlefield Hardline is going to be releasing in Fall 2014. The game will have an all new genre of the war on crime and the battle that wages on between criminals and the police.

Battlefield Hardline has had some footage and info leaked, such as: the classes which are The Mechanic, Enforcer, Operator, and the Professional. Also a new multiplayer map Downtown and the modes included are Bomb Squad, Carrier Assault, and Blood Money. I’m guessing that since a beta has also been announced that this will be the main map and these might be the games modes that will be available to play during that Beta. It looks like the Battlefield franchise will now be running on a rotating developer cycle like Call of Duty where Visceral will be on one year and DICE will be on the other year (for the anticipated Battlefield 5), and they will both have completely different experiences offered to the gamer. There is one difference here though, in that DICE will still be handling the multiplayer portion of the game while Visceral Games takes care of Single Player.

Heist, Rescue, Hotwire and Bloodmoney multiplayer modes are seen in the following video which was leaked ahead of the official announcement.

With this news of Battlefield: Hardline I believe that EA Games is trying to give a new experience, reminiscent of cops and robbers from when we were kids, but remain within the Battlefield universe since they already have a fan-base there. In a lot of ways, what has been seen so far for the game reveals a very thorough and detailed side-universe that takes place in Omaha with a Grand Theft Auto type of feel to it. There’s drugs, dirty cops, emotional scenes, and ties to the underworld from real life found everywhere in this game – along with your occasional cliche’ Hollywood film lines, being placed sarcastically to poke fun at Visceral Games (for example: “That’s xxx million dollars worth of drugs,” a character says to which another character replies, “What are you the drug Rain Man? Let’s go.”)

Battlefield Hardline will be releasing for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Microsoft’s Xbox One, and last-generation machines Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 and will also have support for Battlefield Premium which means there will be a good load of DLC that will follow after its release available to members of the paid subscription service originally offered for the BF games from DICE. After confirming this rumor to be true, EA Games also decided to update the world with information including when to expect a formal announcement. BF: Hardline will be in attendance at E3 2014 the industry trade event being covered on RGN this June (Stay Tuned for what has been called “The Super Bowl of Video Games”!)

Running With Rifles Hands-On Preview

If I had to sum up Running With Rifles in one word, it would be ‘chaotic.’ I mean that in the best way possible, too. From the start, you and your squad of soldiers run across expansive maps trying to gun down the opposing troops.

However, through all the chaos, Running With Rifles offers a fast, fun, and fantastic gaming experience. The thrill of leading your troops into battle, planning out strategies, and finding the best vantage points scattered throughout the maps is like none I’ve experienced in some time.

RWR is a single and multi-player top-down tactical shooter, with the mouse acting as the range and aim of your weapon. The further you point your mouse in front of you, the wider your scope of the battlefield is, which makes spotting enemies easier. However, if you prefer to stay off the front lines and hold down the fort, you also have the ability to command your troops with certain orders.

The fast-paced gameplay that Modulaatio Games offers is just the start, since the game is only now in Early Access for both Steam and Desura. The team is continuously improving the game and listening to the players’ feedback. The game also supports mods and a handy server tracking tool called called RWR Watcher. I really enjoy the game and cannot wait to experience the growth and development Running With Rifles will go under in the coming months.

To witness gameplay, check out the official trailer here!

Ex-Mythic Employee Pleads To EA Release Offline Mode For Warhammer Online Despite It Having “No Gameplay Of Any Kind”

Recently Warhammer Online took its place among the deceased MMORPG games never to be seen again… until… Andrew Meggs (formerly of Mythic and now the co-founder for City State Entertainment) has revealed that the game has an offline mode which was never made available to the public. In a complicated sort of blog post the developer who worked on Warhammer Online, before EA ended up having to pull the plug on it recently, describes an offline mode which featured “no gameplay of any kind” but instead served as a 3D Interactive Tech Demo of the Warhammer Online world and a selection of its assets.

Will EA ever release such a thing? What is the potential for the modding community to do this for them? Time will tell, but here’s a link to the original Blog Post from Andrew making his plea to EA in the first place.

Speaking of Warhammer, we’ll be giving away 4 copies of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War to some lucky winners so check back at our Giveaway Page for more details on the contest as we announce it alongside our separate and even larger XMAS 2013 Steam Giveaway.

GTA Online 1.08 Update: Creator Mode, CTF, Raid, Cheaters Getting Banned, And More [Heists Still Not Out Yet]

GTA Online has taken us for a long road since its initial release in October 2013 and now as we take a look back there’s been many things missing from it being added over time. Recently the game gained Creator Mode and now with update Version 1.08 it gains “Capture Mode” which is essentially Capture the Flag, Raid, Hold, GTA (Grand Theft Auto – instead of stealing and fighting over / defending flags, it’s rides), and Content mode variants. Many other things have been changed in the game as well including increased money for certain categories of gameplay including TDM, LTS, Races (multiple lap races only), Parachute Races, and more.

The glitch that allowed players to gain access to other parts of the map has been removed and Rockstar Games has stated that players who have used money glitches to cheat will be seeing the ban-hammer in their near future lifetime. Bad Sports can only play with Bad Sports and in other change news mission creation became possible last week. Players can now make their own “Jobs” of various types. “Heists” are still not in the Online Mode but have been promised for Single Player DLC (hopefully free for all the waiting for Online Heists)! More on this story as it develops.

NBA 2K14 ‘Path to Greatness’ = LeBron James Story Mode for PS3 / 360

The upcoming basketball video game from 2K Sports, NBA 2K14 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (with next-gen version coming later this year) features its own LeBron James Story Mode called ‘Path to Greatness’. In this mode players will be attempting to break NBA records set by Michael Jordan. There are two formats for doing this and one will involve LeBron on the Miami Heat team with the other titled ‘Fantastic Journey’ and involving a fantasy version of the game’s plot-lines with a focus on fun factor and excitement rather than realism. LeBron James does the official voice-over for these new gameplay modes. For example, several basketball players who are currently retired may end up being playable at a competitive level during this career mode if you choose to play this way.
