Ubisoft Under Fire From Gaming World, Changing Review Policy

Ubisoft is taking fire from gamers, press, and even its own investors after the poor quality of Assassin’s Creed Unity came out. The game has many known tech issues and is almost unbearable for most gamers. Whether it be the frame rate drops, game crashing, or random character glitches, Assassin’s Creed Unity is one of the most poorly prepared games for its launch date this year! Ubisoft is also catching grief because the release date for the game was pushed back to “better the quality.”  The company is also being called the next EA in comparison to the terrible launch that EA’s Battlefield 4 had.

My chiropractor is so fired!!

This isn’t the first time this current gen that Ubisoft has caught some heat from gamers. They also pushed back the release date for Watch Dogs which released earlier this year and The Crew which is currently nine months behind, according to an article on bbc.com. The Crew beta which took place over the weekend leading to the game’s release on December 2nd gained mixed feelings from myself and other gamers. Is this the start of the downhill spiral for Ubisoft? Up next to be released by Ubisoft is Far Cry 4. And for many gamers, including myself, we are wondering what type of quality to expect after the face planting of AC Unity.

In response to the pressure from the gaming world, Ubisoft stated in a conversation with bbc.com,

“We are currently working on our next update that will help address some of the specific issues some players are having including: [the protagonist] Arno falling through the ground; game crashing when joining a co-op session; Arno getting caught inside of hay carts; delay in reaching the main menu screen at game start.”

They also went on to say that the complexity of building a multiplayer game in which players could join forces online, was the reason that the game wasn’t allowed to be reviewed until late.

But, for some reason they failed to mention why they made reviewers agree to a 17 hour embargo after the game was released in the US. Well it seems apparent to many that Ubisoft was trying to hide their mistakes and that they had hoped with the success of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, Unity would be well received. Even with a day one patch Unity still seems to receive poor scores and a very poor reception from gamers. However a spokesperson from Ubisoft went on to say. “The nature of games themselves and the way they are being reviewed is changing, as evidenced by games like Assassin’s Creed Unity, Destiny and The Crew – games that have significant online components.” Perhaps a bail out excuse for the company and a way to protect what little dignity they have left after this miscue of a game?

Whatever the excuse is, it’s not going to be enough of an apology to gamers. In a change of heart the spokesperson also stated, “We are working to adapt our services and communications with consumers accordingly, both by changing the way we work with reviewers and by offering customers open betas or other early access to some games, all so that they have the information they need and want.”

Is this going to be enough to change the minds of the gaming world? Will other Ubisoft titles be well received or does one game ruin the entire show from here on out?

Holiday Console Dilemma

As the holidays roll closer, I still have several friends and family members that have yet to upgrade to ps4 or xb1. And obviously, the most common question I get since I own both is, which console do you prefer and why?

Well at this point right now, PS4 is my primary gaming console. There isn’t just one reason why I have chose the PS4 as my primary console. The obvious reason would be that most games run at a native 1080p. I get that some are 60 fps and others are 30 fps but, just having them run at 1080p is an important factor. Secondly, I would say that the load times of games is much much quicker and smoother on ps4. For instance, I double dipped recently and bought Call of Duty Advanced Warfare on both consoles. I know, I know but, “it’s COD and it’s just recycled and reused material,” blah blah blah. I said the same thing myself but, I actually enjoy this COD more than any recent Call of Duty games dating back to Black Ops 1. Anwyay, back to the subject at hand, install times. When I installed COD on my ps4, it probably took 5 minutes or less. When I installed it on my xb1, it took roughly 45 minutes or more and that was from the disc! I always disconnect from the internet when I’m installing games on my xb1 as well, it seems to help here and there. But, I get that there are other factors that play into which console you will buy.

I also know that money plays a factor into what you’re going to get as well. And with the Black Friday ads rolling out, there are tons of great deals on the consoles. So let’s talk about which I think is the best value right now. In my opinion the best bang for your buck is the Assassin’s Creed Xbox One bundle. For $329 at Best Buy and Target, you get an Xbox One console with controller and both Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, as well as Assassin’s Creed Unity. With most of the bundles though dropping to about the $349 mark, you can’t really go wrong with those either. Now keep in mind I said that this is the best value for a new console and not necessarily the best quality. Not that the Xbox One is a bad console or anything.

If you want the best QUALITY, then I would highly recommend the Playstation 4. Again, it’s quick, it’s smooth and it looks great. Although, you’re still going to fork out $399 for the ps4 bundle, it’s well worth it. As seen in both the Target and Best Buy ads again, you can get a Playstation 4 console with controller, The Last of Us Remastered, and Grand Theft Auto V. While this too is a great deal with great games, $70 is a big difference in the eyes of a lot of people. But, if you can swing that amount, definitely pick up this bundle and enjoy one of the best games from last gen in The Last of Us.

So even though Microsoft is offering great deals on the Xbox One, I do highly recommend the ps4. But, I’m a fan of both and enjoy playing both consoles for different reasons. And my answer will always be this no matter what, Always, always play what you want! My opinions are my opinions and there will be many to agree and disagree. When you’re out there shopping this Black Friday, just buy whatever is going to make you happy.

Let me know what your thoughts are on this subject. Is the ps4 the better quality? Is the xb1 the better value of the two this holiday season? Which will you be getting and why?
